About DAB files

The .DAB file format primarily stores audio and synchronization data for Dian Du Bi reading pens, functioning as a proprietary Digital Audio Book. Another notable variant is the OrangeCD Database File, developed by Codium Labs to store extensive music collection metadata. Occasionally, .DAB is also associated with digital assets from Daz Studio.

These files are notoriously restricted and difficult to manage outside their native ecosystems. Reading pen .DAB files use closed, proprietary audio encoding to prevent piracy, meaning standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player cannot open them. You cannot directly transfer a .DAB file to a smartphone for playback. Similarly, OrangeCD databases are locked to the specific cataloging software, making the raw data completely useless if the software is not installed.

Users typically want to extract the locked audio into standard MP3 or WAV formats, or export their catalog data to CSV or XML to migrate to modern database tools. However, doing so directly is often impossible because the internal architecture of .DAB files lacks universal standards.

Because .DAB is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters fail to process it. Often, only the original hardware pen or software can properly read or export the data.

Just drag and drop your .DAB file onto convert.guru to see what it is and attempt to convert it if supported. Our system will identify the specific file format, inspect the binary data, and display text headers or internal content. If our deep analysis detects a supported embedded audio stream or database string, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DAB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted VMI, DSE and RDS files.

The DAB Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DAB converter.
