About CYG files

The .CYG file is a proprietary 3D object library format primarily associated with home design software developed by Cygnicon GmbH, such as the widely used Ashampoo Home Design. These files function as digital containers for architectural assets - storing 3D models of furniture, fixtures, and textures used to populate virtual floor plans.

The main challenge with .CYG files is their strict vendor lock-in. Unlike open formats like OBJ or FBX, a .CYG file is not a standalone 3D mesh that can be simply dragged into Blender or Autodesk 3ds Max. It is often encrypted or structurally compiled specifically for the Cygnicon/Ashampoo engine, meaning you cannot view or edit the contents without the original host application. Users often encounter these files when trying to recover assets from old design projects, only to find their modern CAD tools reject the format.

For practical use outside the Ashampoo ecosystem, the only reliable workflow is to open the library in the original software and export the specific objects to widely supported formats. For generic 3D editing, target OBJ or DAE (Collada) to preserve geometry and textures. For architectural CAD work, converting to DXF or DWG is preferable.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CYG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted UTL, FUD and FHF files.

The CYG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CYG converter.
