Convert CUI to another file type
To convert CUI workspaces to another format, you need AutoCAD or other Settings software.
Convert a file to CUI
To convert other file formats to the "Custom User Interface File" file type, you need software like AutoCAD or a similar tool.
About CUI files
The .CUI file format is an XML-based configuration file used by legacy versions of AutoCAD (specifically releases 2006 through 2009) to store custom user interface elements. It defines the precise layout of toolbars, menus, command shortcuts, ribbon panels, and individual user workspaces.
The primary disadvantage of the .CUI format is its absolute obsolescence. Autodesk replaced it in 2010 with the CUIX format. Because it is a legacy proprietary structure, modern CAD systems outside the Autodesk ecosystem cannot read it. Furthermore, the file stores interface data without the associated custom icons, meaning sharing a .CUI file often results in missing graphics on the recipient's machine. Manually editing the underlying XML without a dedicated parser is also prone to syntax errors that can permanently break the workspace.
To modernize these interface settings or safely audit their contents, conversion is required. Convert .CUI to CUIX to migrate your legacy workspace into modern AutoCAD environments. For manual text editing, auditing, or version control archiving, convert the file to XML or TXT.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CUI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert CUI file to CC, INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, ENV or PROPERTIES, you can use AutoCAD or similar software from the "Custom User Interface Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to CUI, try AutoCAD or another comparable tool in the "Custom User Interface Storage" category.
The CUI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CUI converter.
