About CRYPTO files
The .CRYPTO extension is shared by two completely different file types, creating a critical distinction for users.
1. MedusaLocker Ransomware (Most Common): In the vast majority of cases (over 80%), a .CRYPTO file is a document (like a DOCX, JPG, or XLSX) that has been locked by the MedusaLocker ransomware. These files use industrial-strength AES-256 and RSA-2048 encryption to render your data inaccessible. The defining characteristic is that these files appear suddenly, often replacing your working documents, and are accompanied by a ransom note (usually an HTML file). You cannot simply "convert" these files back to their original state using standard file converters because the data is mathematically scrambled. The only way to "open" them is to restore the original file from an offline backup or use a specific decryption tool if one has been released by security researchers.
2. MacPaw Encrypto Archive: Alternatively, a .CRYPTO file may be a legitimate secure archive created by Encrypto, a utility from MacPaw. These are intentionally encrypted containers used to send sensitive data securely over email or cloud storage. While secure, they present a friction point: the recipient must have the Encrypto software installed (available for macOS and Windows) and know the password to access the contents.
Conversion & Recovery:
For Ransomware: Do not pay the ransom. Use ID Ransomware to confirm the strain and check for a free decryptor. Your primary path is restoring from a backup.
For Encrypto: You must first use the Encrypto desktop app to decrypt and extract the files. Once extracted, the original files (e.g., PDF, MP4) can be edited or converted to other formats like ZIP for broader accessibility without proprietary software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CRYPTO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert CRYPTO file to BASE64, HEX, BIN, ENC, CRYPT, AES, DES, RSA, PGP, GPG, ASC or KEY, you can use Encrypto or similar software from the "Encrypted Data Container" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The CRYPTO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CRYPTO converter.
