About CPY files
The .CPY file extension is exceptionally fragmented because developers frequently use it as shorthand for 'copy.' Most commonly, it functions as a CronosPlus database copy or CroArc database file. However, it is heavily utilized in enterprise environments by Nuance eCopy ShareScan as a disguised PDF document. Additionally, dashcams from brands like VIOFO and BlackVue save unfinalized video recordings as .CPY temporary files instead of standard MP4s. Other systems, including the Microsoft Jet Database Engine and Sony PlayStation, use it for compressed backups and game saves.
The primary disadvantage of the .CPY format is this extreme ambiguity. A user cannot reliably guess the software required to open it simply by looking at the extension. Trying to open an enterprise eCopy document in a database manager will fail, and attempting to play a database backup in a video player will cause an error. Furthermore, proprietary database .CPY files are closed formats. If you need to access the data, you must use the original software (such as Microsoft Access or CronosPlus) to restore the backup and export it to a standard format like CSV or SQL.
Standard online converters fail with .CPY files because they rely entirely on the file extension rather than parsing the internal file structure. Because the extension represents at least six different formats, generic tools throw an error. Our engine analyzes the binary signature of your file. If we detect that your .CPY is actually an underlying PDF document or an unfinalized MP4 video, viewing and conversion may still be seamlessly possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CPY file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The CPY Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CPY converter.
