The .CPY extension is a generic identifier often used to denote a 'Copy' or backup file, resulting in three distinct formats that cause compatibility headaches. The most statistically common variant is a CronosPlus database backup. These files are proprietary archives; without the original legacy software, the data inside - often critical business records - is effectively locked away, inaccessible to modern tools like Microsoft Excel.
A more frequent source of daily friction comes from Nuance eCopy systems (now part of Kofax/Tungsten). Scanners using eCopy ShareScan may save documents with a .CPY extension. While these often contain standard PDF data, the non-standard extension breaks file associations, preventing you from opening them in Adobe Acrobat or web browsers. Similarly, VIOFO dashcams generate .CPY files as temporary containers for video streams. If power is cut before the file finalizes to MP4, you are left with an unplayable video file.
For Nuance files, converting to standard PDF is the best solution for archiving and sharing. For dashcam recovery, converting to MP4 is essential for playback in VLC Media Player. For database files, the goal is extracting data to CSV or XLSX to migrate away from the legacy format.
