About COO files
The .coo extension primarily belongs to two distinct technical fields: land surveying and computational mathematics. In civil engineering and surveying, .coo files store coordinate data (easting, northing, elevation) used by software like Carlson Software, TopoLT, and Topcon Tools. These files are essential for topographical mapping but are highly specialized. Relying on them is problematic if you need to share site data with clients or contractors who lack a $2,000 surveying software license.
Alternatively, in mathematics, .coo stands for Coordinate format. It is used by the SuiteSparse Matrix Collection and GraphBLAS to store sparse matrix graph data. These files hold simple lists of row, column, and value tuples. The main disadvantage here is file size; a sparse matrix .coo file can easily exceed hundreds of megabytes, instantly crashing standard text editors.
Converting .coo files to universal formats like CSV or TXT for data analysis, or MTX (Matrix Market) for math software, is highly recommended. Because these formats are niche and share the same extension, standard online converters often fail to process them. A converter cannot guess if it is looking at topographical land data or a graph matrix. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the binary data. If our analysis detects plain text or a supported underlying structure, we can extract your coordinates or matrix data.
Convert.Guru analyzes your COO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert COO file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use Carlson Software or similar software from the "Survey and Matrix Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to COO, try Carlson Software or another comparable tool in the "Survey and Matrix Data" category.
The COO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our COO converter.
