Designed for the Clicker Docs iPad app (recently rebranded as Clicker Writer), these files are primarily used in special education to assist young learners and students with dyslexia. A single file stores standard text alongside specialized page layout elements, intelligent word predictors, and interactive vocabulary "word banks".
While highly effective in the classroom, the .CLKD format presents major interoperability problems. It is a strictly closed, proprietary container. Because it tightly integrates text with interactive literacy aids like text-to-speech settings and custom cloze activities, you cannot open it in standard software like Microsoft Word or Google Docs. This forces parents and teachers to maintain a paid subscription to the Crick Software ecosystem just to read or print a child's homework.
For sharing outside the classroom, you must convert .CLKD to PDF, DOCX, or TXT. Converting to standard text or PDF strips away the interactive elements like voice notes and word palettes, leaving only the student's written content.
