About CLASSLIST files

The .CLASSLIST file extension is a proprietary data format primarily used by SMART Notebook, an interactive learning software suite developed by SMART Technologies. Teachers and educators use these files to store student rosters, grades, identification numbers, and assessment tracking data for interactive whiteboard sessions.

To natively open and manage .CLASSLIST files, you need a licensed installation of SMART Learning Suite or SMART Response software. This creates a significant real-world problem: the format is completely closed. It tightly locks your student data inside the SMART ecosystem. You cannot natively open a .CLASSLIST file in standard web browsers, text editors, or standard spreadsheet applications without an active, often expensive, educational license.

Because of these severe limitations, users frequently need to convert .CLASSLIST files into standard data formats like CSV, XLSX, or TXT. Converting to these open formats allows you to migrate student rosters into standard Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Canvas, Blackboard, or Google Classroom. Be aware that during conversion, SMART-specific interactive metadata or proprietary assessment rules will be lost, but the core text data (names, IDs, grades) is preserved.

This format is notoriously difficult to open outside of its native environment because it intentionally obscures simple text data to enforce software lock-in. Standard online converters fail to process it. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded text format, extracting your class list data may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CLASSLIST file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
