About CLARA files

A .clara file is a proprietary 3D scene archive used to store web-based 3D models, textures, materials, and animations. It was originally created for and opened by Clara.io, a browser-based 3D modeling platform developed by Exocortex Technologies. Because the Clara.io service has been discontinued, these files are now orphaned. Standard 3D software like Blender or Autodesk Maya cannot read .clara files natively. You will need to extract the contained data into universal 3D formats like .OBJ, .FBX, or .GLTF to recover your geometry, though complex node setups and proprietary cloud materials will likely be lost. This file format is difficult to open or convert because it relies heavily on dead cloud infrastructure. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. We can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, like a standard ZIP container holding JSON scene graphs and image textures, viewing or extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CLARA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The CLARA Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CLARA converter.
