About CHATLOG files

A .chatlog file is essentially an XML-formatted record of instant messaging conversations, most notably generated by the Adium multi-protocol messaging client for macOS or the cross-platform Pidgin messenger. These files store metadata - timestamps, sender IDs, and message status - alongside the actual text content. While efficient for the software, the raw XML structure makes these files difficult for humans to read comfortably without the original application installed. Furthermore, on macOS, a .chatlog is often a package (a folder masquerading as a file) containing the XML data and media attachments, which can be a hassle when trying to share specific conversations or open them on Windows or Linux systems. Users typically convert these logs to remove the proprietary software dependency and create accessible archives. For legal discovery, printing, or long-term archiving, converting to PDF is the standard best practice. For searching text or data processing, converting to TXT or CSV strips away the XML tags, leaving only the conversation history.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CHATLOG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted XSPF, GLADE and X83 files.
