About CAV files

A .CAV file is a proprietary virus signature database used exclusively by Comodo Antivirus and related security suites. It contains compiled definitions necessary to detect and mitigate malicious software, including viruses, trojans, and ransomware. The primary disadvantage of the .CAV format is its highly specialized, closed ecosystem. It is a proprietary binary file designed only for machine reading. Users cannot open these files in standard text editors or database viewers. If you attempt to open a .CAV file in Notepad, you will only see unreadable characters. They also frequently exceed hundreds of megabytes in size, making them cumbersome to handle. Standard online converters fail to process .CAV files because the internal structure is undocumented and specific to Comodo's threat-detection engine. You cannot practically convert a .CAV file to standard formats like CSV or PDF to read the virus list, nor can you convert it to work with other antivirus software like Avast or Bitdefender. Often only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CAV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CSV, SAV, CBS, XVU and BPS files.

The CAV Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CAV converter.
