A .CATALOG file is primarily a business intelligence report index generated by Oracle BI Publisher or Oracle Hyperion. It can also function as a security catalog in Microsoft Windows, a component index in CATIA V5, or a JSON-based Addressable asset system catalog in the Unity game engine.
The main disadvantage of .CATALOG files is their fragmentation and proprietary nature. Oracle BI files use zlib compression to store schemas that require expensive enterprise licenses to open. Windows security catalogs contain cryptographic hashes useful only to the operating system. CATIA and Unity catalogs are strictly bound to their respective native software. They are difficult to share with external stakeholders and cannot be opened natively by web browsers.
