A .BQY file is a proprietary query and reporting document created by the now-discontinued Oracle Hyperion Interactive Reporting suite (originally developed by Brio Software). These files act as containers that store database connection strings, SQL logic, data models, and formatted report layouts.
A key limitation of .BQY files is severe vendor lock-in and obsolescence. Since Oracle ended support for Hyperion Interactive Reporting, opening these files requires legacy software (IR Studio) that often struggles to run on modern operating systems like Windows 10 or 11. The format is binary, meaning you cannot simply open it in a text editor to retrieve the valuable SQL queries inside. Users typically encounter these files when trying to migrate legacy business intelligence data to modern platforms.
For migration and data recovery, the best approach is converting the internal logic or data. Converting the query definition to SQL allows database administrators to reuse the logic in modern tools like Tableau or Power BI. If the file contains cached results, converting to CSV or XLSX renders the data accessible in Microsoft Excel. For archiving the visual layout of a report, PDF is the preferred target format.
