About CAROTE files

The .carote file extension indicates a file encrypted by the Carote ransomware, a destructive variant of the widespread STOP/Djvu malware family. Users typically encounter these files after a system infection, where the malware targets personal documents, images, and videos, appending the .carote extension to the original filename. Because the file data is heavily modified, no standard software or operating system can open it natively.

Users urgently need to convert these files to regain access to their original JPG, DOCX, or MP4 data. The primary disadvantage of this format is that it completely locks user data using military-grade AES-256 or RSA encryption algorithms. Standard online converters fail entirely because the underlying binary data is scrambled, not merely encoded in a different format. Paying the ransom is heavily discouraged by cybersecurity experts, as it funds criminal operations and never guarantees file recovery.

The only practical solution is to decrypt the files to their original target formats. This requires specific decryption software, such as the Emsisoft Decryptor for STOP Djvu, which can sometimes restore files if an offline encryption key was used.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, malicious format designed explicitly to prevent access. Often only the original malware operator holds the private key required to properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - such as unencrypted file headers or metadata - viewing or partial conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CAROTE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The CAROTE Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CAROTE converter.
