About CAPT files

The .CAPT file extension is primarily used as a Capito Data File, developed by Linrock Software. It acts as a compressed project container that stores step-by-step software instructions, combining raw screenshot images with XML structural data.

Opening and editing these files natively requires the original Capito software. This creates a significant disadvantage: because the format is entirely proprietary, you cannot open a .CAPT file in a standard web browser, text editor, or document viewer. This lock-in makes it incredibly frustrating to share your instructional documentation with colleagues or clients who do not pay for or install Capito.

To make your guides accessible, the best conversion targets are universal formats like PDF, DOCX, PPTX, or HTML. However, this file format is difficult to open or convert with generic tools because the internal XML must be parsed and laid out alongside the images by the proprietary engine. Standard online converters almost always fail to process it. Because .CAPT is fundamentally a ZIP archive, if our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or extracting the internal images and XML text may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CAPT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
