About CAF files
The .CAF (Core Audio Format) is a flexible container developed by Apple to overcome the limitations of older digital audio formats. Unlike standard AIFF or WAV files, which are capped at 4GB due to 32-bit addressing, CAF uses 64-bit file offsets, allowing for massive audio recordings and complex multi-channel data. While this makes it ideal for professional sound design, loops in Logic Pro, and iOS app development, it creates significant compatibility friction outside the Apple ecosystem. Windows users and standard media players (like Windows Media Player) typically cannot open these files without additional codecs. For broad compatibility, it is best to convert CAF files to MP3 or AAC for web streaming and casual listening. For archiving or editing on non-Apple systems, converting to FLAC (lossless) or WAV (uncompressed) ensures audio fidelity is preserved. Note: Occasionally, a .CAF file may be a character animation file from CryEngine; if your file is not audio, it is likely a 3D asset requiring specific game development tools.
