Extract text from C4P files
To convert your C4P file to another format, you need Control4 Composer or other Settings software.
To convert other file formats to the "Smart Home Archive" file type, you need software like Control4 Composer or a similar tool.
A .C4P file is a proprietary project archive used by Control4 home automation systems to store a complete smart home configuration. These files contain the topology of the home, including device bindings, programming logic, lighting scenes, and user interface settings.
The main issue for .C4P files is the strict "closed ecosystem" model. Officially, these files can only be opened or modified using Control4 Composer Pro (restricted to authorized dealers) or Composer HE (a paid license for homeowners with limited access). Users possessing a .C4P backup often cannot view their own system data, check programming logic, or retrieve embedded images without dealer assistance.
Fortunately, the .C4P format is technically a standard ZIP container. For data recovery or inspection, the best workflow is to convert (rename) the file to ZIP. This allows you to extract the internal project.xml file (which holds the readable configuration data), embedded JPG or PNG interface icons, and occasionally LUA scripts. While you cannot easily edit and reload the file back to a controller without Composer, converting to XML or Text allows for auditing and archiving system setups.
