About BYU files
The .byu file is a legacy 3D geometry and animation format used by the MOVIE.BYU software system, developed at Brigham Young University. It primarily stores polygonal meshes, node data, and surface connectivity used for scientific and engineering visualizations.
Historically, these files were opened with MOVIE.BYU on mainframe computers. Today, a few specialized scientific visualization tools, such as ParaView, can still parse certain versions of this legacy mesh format.
The .byu format has severe disadvantages for modern users. It is deeply outdated, completely unsupported by standard operating systems, and unrecognizable to modern web browsers or mainstream 3D software. The format lacks support for modern Physically Based Rendering (PBR) materials, advanced rigging, and modern data compression.
To use this data today, you must convert the geometry to standard 3D targets like OBJ, STL, or PLY. If the file contains animation frames, rendering it to a modern video format like MP4 is necessary.
Because this is an archaic and closed format from the 1970s, standard online converters fail to process it. Usually, only specialized academic software can properly read the original data arrays.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BYU file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The BYU Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BYU converter.
