About BUS files

A .BUS file typically serves one of two distinct purposes, creating confusion for users trying to open them. The most actionable use case is within OMSI 2 (The Omnibus Simulator), where the file acts as a plain-text configuration script defining vehicle physics, paths, and model parameters. Modders frequently need to access these files to tweak engine performance or passenger capacity. However, because the extension is non-standard, operating systems often fail to associate it with a text editor, forcing users to manually select tools like Notepad++ or convert the file to TXT for easier viewing.

Alternatively, .BUS files appear as binary game archives in titles like Zombie Busters or older Raven Software games. In this context, the file is a proprietary container - similar to a ZIP or PAK - bundling audio, textures, and level data to optimize loading times. The friction here is high: these binary blobs are locked by specific encoding, meaning you cannot simply "convert" them to an image or sound file without specialized extraction scripts or hex editors.

For OMSI users, the best conversion workflow is changing the container to TXT for editing, or PDF for archiving mod documentation. For game archives, unless you have specific unpacking tools, the files are generally read-only and unsuitable for standard conversion.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BUS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted O3D, ASS, XBX and RV files.

The BUS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BUS converter.
