The .booktemplate file is a proprietary document template used by two discontinued publishing applications: Apple iBooks Author and Blurb BookSmart. These files store pre-defined page layouts, text styles, margins, and image placeholders to act as a standardized starting point for creating digital e-books or physical printed photo books.
Since both Apple iBooks Author and Blurb BookSmart have been completely replaced by modern tools (Apple Pages and Blurb BookWright respectively), opening these legacy files today is incredibly frustrating. The format is locked into an outdated ecosystem, making these files essentially inaccessible on modern operating systems without the original, outdated software installed.
Converting these proprietary templates to standard, universally readable formats like PDF or EPUB is highly recommended to ensure your original layout remains accessible for future use. However, because the format is a closed and undocumented system, standard online converters usually fail to process the complex internal layout instructions.
