About BO2 files

A .BO2 file is a custom object configuration file used by Minecraft terrain generation plugins, such as TerrainControl and OpenTerrainGenerator (OTG). These files store the relative coordinates and block IDs for custom structures, trees, and features that spawn during world generation. The main disadvantage of the .BO2 format is its reliance on outdated Minecraft numeric block IDs, which were phased out in modern game versions. Furthermore, these files are specific to a handful of plugins and cannot be opened directly by standard 3D modeling software like Blender or Autodesk Maya. They are not standard 3D meshes; they are restrictive voxel coordinate lists, making them highly prone to compatibility issues when updating a server. To keep custom structures usable, server administrators often need to convert .BO2 files into newer formats like BO3, BO4, or standard SCHEMATIC files. Because this is a highly specialized game configuration format, standard online converters fail to process it. Only the original terrain generation plugins or dedicated Minecraft community scripts can properly read or export the voxel data.
