About BLKRT files

A .BLKRT file is a proprietary bitmap image format originally created by the legacy Windows software Block Artist. These files were primarily utilized to save pixel-based or block-style artwork, commonly used in early game development and educational projects.

To natively view or edit a .BLKRT file, users traditionally needed the original Block Artist application running on an older version of Windows. Today, this software is entirely discontinued, unsupported, and virtually impossible to acquire safely from modern sources.

Users must convert these files because they are completely incompatible with modern operating systems and web browsers. A .BLKRT file is locked behind a dead software ecosystem. You cannot share, view, or open the graphic on a modern PC, Mac, or smartphone without specialized interventions. Its proprietary nature means the visual data is trapped.

To recover the graphic, the best target formats are universally recognized raster files such as PNG or JPG. Converting to PNG is highly recommended as it preserves the crisp, pixel-perfect edges typical of block art, whereas JPG might introduce unwanted compression artifacts. Archiving the artwork inside a PDF is also a viable option if it needs to be included in a document.

Because this file format is closed and highly obscure, it is incredibly difficult to process. Standard online image converters routinely fail because they lack the specific legacy decoders required to read the proprietary data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded bitmap format, viewing or extracting the image may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BLKRT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The BLKRT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BLKRT converter.
