About BCLIM files

A .bclim file is a proprietary graphics format used exclusively by the Nintendo 3DS for storing 2D sprites, textures, and user interface elements in video games. Game modders, dataminers, and ROM hackers frequently encounter these files when extracting data from decrypted 3DS game dumps. Specialized community software like Every File Explorer or Kuriimu are typically required to open and manipulate them. The primary disadvantage of the .bclim format is its highly restricted, closed-ecosystem design. It is completely unrecognized by standard operating systems, web browsers, and commercial image editors like Adobe Photoshop. Because the format is locked to the console's architecture, users must convert these files to edit game graphics or simply view ripped visual assets. The best conversion target is PNG, as it preserves the exact pixel data and alpha transparency required for game sprites without lossy compression artifacts. Alternatively, TGA is useful for certain older texture-editing pipelines. Converting .bclim is notoriously difficult because the image encoding, swizzling, and compression logic are proprietary to Nintendo. Standard online converters fail because they lack the specific CTR (the 3DS hardware codename) decoding algorithms. Often, only the original game engine or dedicated homebrew tools can properly read and export the pixel data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying graphic stream, viewing or conversion to standard formats may still be successful.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BCLIM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
