About BCLAN files

The .bclan file is a 3DS Binary CTR Layout Animation used primarily by Nintendo in their 3DS handheld console. This file stores the animation data for user interface layouts, such as menu transitions and button movements. This format presents severe limitations for average users. It is a closed, proprietary binary format designed exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS operating system. Files are not supported by web browsers, and you cannot open them in standard animation software like Adobe After Effects. Standard online converters fail to process .bclan files because they lack the proprietary CTR (Citrus) libraries required to parse the animation coordinates and timing data. To extract or edit the animation, modders typically convert the data into an XML or JSON format using specialized reverse-engineering tools like Every File Explorer or Kuriimu. Direct conversion to video formats like MP4 is impossible because the file contains layout math, not rendered pixels. Because this file format is difficult to open or convert, often only the original software or specific modding tools can properly read the data.
