About BACKUP1 files

A .backup1 file is a segmented chunk of a larger device backup created by the Google Android operating system. It typically contains partial backups of user data, such as app settings, contacts, SMS messages, and media files. These files are usually generated by Android's System Recovery Mode or the ADB (Android Debug Bridge) utility.

The format exists due to strict storage limitations. Older Android devices heavily relied on SD cards formatted with the FAT32 file system, which enforces a strict 4GB (and sometimes 2GB) maximum limit on a single file. When a full system backup exceeds this threshold, Android automatically splits the archive into a sequential series: backup, .backup1, .backup2, and so on. As a standalone entity, a .backup1 file is highly problematic because it lacks the crucial archive header located in the initial .backup file, rendering it an incomplete binary blob.

Standard online file converters will always fail to process a standalone .backup1 file because it is an incomplete, proprietary, and often zlib-compressed or AES-encrypted system file. The pragmatic solution is not direct conversion, but extraction. You must concatenate all split parts into a single, contiguous archive before you can extract target files like TAR, ZIP, VCF (contacts), or DB (database files). If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BACKUP1 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
