About BA7 files

A .BA7 file is a proprietary backup archive created by the 2017 edition of TaxAct desktop software. It contains a backup of a user's 2017 federal and state tax returns, along with personal financial data. These files are exclusively designed for use with TaxAct.

The biggest frustration with .BA7 files is that they are closed, proprietary archives. They require the exact 2017 legacy version of TaxAct to open properly. You cannot natively view them in a web browser, text editor, or generic document viewer. Furthermore, because they are backups rather than primary working files (like TA7), they cannot simply be opened; they must go through a specific "Restore Backup" process within the original software.

Users typically want to convert these files to PDF for easy printing and long-term storage, or restore them into the standard TA7 format to view or edit the return. However, doing so outside the original software is extremely difficult without losing the precise visual layout of official IRS tax forms.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because tax preparation software typically encrypts or obfuscates user data to protect highly sensitive personal and financial information. Consequently, standard online converters fail to process it. Our system can inspect the file to determine if it is a valid backup and, in some cases, extract underlying plain text or embedded data structures to help you recover lost records.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BA7 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
