About AZW1 files
The .AZW1 file is a proprietary Amazon Topaz eBook format developed by Amazon for its Kindle devices and software ecosystem. Unlike standard reflowable text formats, Topaz files are primarily used for scanned books. They store embedded glyphs of the original pages and include a hidden Optical Character Recognition (OCR) text layer underneath. This unique structure allows readers to see the exact original typography while still enabling text search and highlighting.
You can natively open .AZW1 files using a physical Kindle e-reader or the free Amazon Kindle app for desktop and mobile. However, this format carries major disadvantages. It is completely locked into a single corporate ecosystem. You cannot read an .AZW1 file in standard web browsers, and it requires proprietary software to access. Most problematically, the vast majority of these files are wrapped in strict Digital Rights Management (DRM) encryption that prevents you from sharing or backing up your own purchased library.
Users typically need to convert .AZW1 files to open standards like EPUB or PDF to read them on alternative devices like Kobo or Onyx Boox. Converting to PDF is the most reliable target because it preserves the fixed-layout typography. Converting to EPUB or MOBI enables text reflowing, but you will likely lose the original fonts and formatting.
This format is notoriously difficult to open or convert. Because it is a closed, proprietary, and heavily encrypted file, standard online converters almost always fail. Often, only the original Amazon software can properly decrypt and read the data. However, convert.guru offers a pragmatic workaround. Drag and drop your file to see what it is, inspect its metadata, and check its internal structure. If our analysis detects a DRM-free file or a supported embedded layer, we can extract the text and convert it to a standard format.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AZW1 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The AZW1 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AZW1 converter.
