About AY files

The .AY extension refers to two distinct file types that confuse standard media players. The most common is the AY Chiptune file, a retro audio format containing raw instruction sets for the General Instrument AY-3-8910 programmable sound generator (PSG). These files do not contain actual audio waveforms; instead, they store the code required to synthesize music on 8-bit systems like the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, and Atari ST. Because they are code-based, they are incredibly small (often just a few kilobytes) but completely unplayable on modern software like VLC or Windows Media Player without specialized emulation plugins. Users typically convert these to MP3 or WAV to listen to them on smartphones or use them in video editing.

The second type is a Maestro Music Score, created by the mobile app Maestro Composer. These files store musical notation, instrumentation, and layout data for sheet music. They are proprietary to the app, meaning you cannot open them in desktop notation software like MuseScore or Sibelius. To share or edit this work outside the app, users must convert these files to PDF for printing, MusicXML for editing in other software, or MIDI for audio playback.

Users also converted MP3, WMA, SILK and M4A files.
