About AXX files
An .AXX file is predominantly a secure, encrypted container created by AxCrypt. These files are not standard documents or images; rather, they are "digital vaults" that wrap your original files (such as DOCX, PDF, or JPG) in military-grade AES-128 or AES-256 encryption. While this ensures high security, it is a common headache for accessibility: the file is completely unusable without the AxCrypt software and the correct passphrase or private key. You cannot preview these files in a web browser, edit them in standard office suites, or share them with recipients who lack the decryption tools.
A secondary, much rarer use of the .AXX extension is for Pinnacle Studio project packages, used to bundle video editing assets. To make your data usable again, the "conversion" process is strictly defined by the file's origin. For AxCrypt files, you must decrypt them to restore the original format (e.g., converting .AXX back to XLSX for Excel). Once decrypted, we recommend converting to PDF for secure sharing or PDF/A for long-term archiving without proprietary lock-in. For Pinnacle projects, the file serves as a backup to be reopened in the editing suite.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AXX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert AXX file to BASE64, HEX, BIN, ENC, CRYPT, AES, DES, RSA, PGP, GPG, ASC or KEY, you can use AxCrypt or similar software from the "Encrypted File Container" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert CER, BIN, PEM, DER, KEY, P7S, PFX, ENC, P12, BASE64, P7B or HEX files to AXX, try AxCrypt or another comparable tool in the "Encrypted File Container" category.
The AXX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AXX converter.
