Convert AXM to another file type
To convert AXM sketches to another format, you need Autodesk FormIt or other 3D software.
Convert a file to AXM
To convert other file formats to the "3D Sketch Model" file type, you need software like Autodesk FormIt or a similar tool.
About AXM files
.AXM files are proprietary 3D sketch models created primarily by Autodesk FormIt and Autodesk Fusion 360. They store early-stage conceptual architectural designs, multi-layered geometry, and material data used by architects before transitioning to detailed engineering phases.
You can natively open and edit these files using Autodesk FormIt or import them seamlessly into Autodesk Revit for advanced Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflows. A small fraction of .AXM files belong to the obsolete AXMEDIS Object framework, used historically for digital rights management.
The major disadvantage of the .AXM format is vendor lock-in. It is a closed, proprietary file type that requires an Autodesk ecosystem to fully utilize. Standard web browsers, default operating system viewers, and competing CAD software like SketchUp or Blender cannot open .AXM files natively, making it extremely difficult to share concepts with clients who lack specialized software.
To safely share your work or print it, you must convert .AXM files to open formats. Convert to OBJ or STL for 3D printing and general 3D rendering. For 2D drafting and cross-platform CAD work, convert to DWG or DXF. Be aware that converting away from native Autodesk formats will strip away advanced parametric BIM data, dynamic constraints, and proprietary material properties.
Because .AXM is a closed, highly complex proprietary format, standard online converters often fail to process it. Usually, only the original Autodesk software can properly read or export the geometric data. However, just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to identify the format, inspect the file structure, and view internal content. If our analysis detects supported underlying meshes or embedded formats, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AXM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted AXMB, FBX, M21 and MP21 files.
FAQ
If you want to convert AXM file to DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP, IGES, SAT, X_T or X_B, you can use Autodesk FormIt or similar software from the "3D Conceptual Architectural Sketching" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to AXM, try Autodesk FormIt or another comparable tool in the "3D Conceptual Architectural Sketching" category.
The AXM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AXM converter.
