The .AXL file extension represents a split between high-end automotive engineering and legacy geospatial mapping, creating frequent compatibility headaches. Primarily, these are AUTOSAR architecture model files created by dSPACE SystemDesk. In this context, the file serves as a container (often strictly formatted ZIP or XML) for defining complex automotive software systems. The friction arises because these files are tied to proprietary workflows; opening them without a valid dSPACE license is virtually impossible, leaving engineers unable to view the model structure.
Alternatively, an .AXL file may be a legacy ArcXML configuration file generated by retired ESRI products like ArcIMS. While these are standard text-based XML files used to define map layers and symbology, modern GIS platforms like ArcGIS Pro have deprecated direct support for them. This renders the files usable only as reference code rather than active map projects.
For universal access, the most practical approach is converting these files to PDF for documentation and archiving purposes. If you need to inspect the raw data structure, converting (or renaming) the file to ZIP (for dSPACE archives) or XML (for ESRI maps) allows you to open them in any standard text editor or IDE to salvage the configuration data.
