About AVV files
The .AVV format is a proprietary data container used as an Avid Volume Bin File. It tracks media drives, folder structures, and project assets in complex video editing workflows. These files are generated and managed primarily by Avid Media Composer, the flagship non-linear editing software developed by Avid Technology.
Editors frequently need to convert or extract data from this file when collaborating with teams using different software. The major disadvantage of the .AVV format is its severe vendor lock-in. It is a closed, binary format that requires a costly, active Avid subscription or hardware dongle to open. It is entirely unreadable by web browsers, standard text editors, and competitor applications like Adobe Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve.
To share sequences and bins with other platforms, the best conversion targets are AAF, XML, or EDL. Moving to these standard formats allows you to rebuild your timeline elsewhere, though complex effects, color grades, and proprietary Avid metadata are often lost. You cannot convert .AVV to video formats like MP4 or MOV, because the file holds only structural metadata, not the actual media.
Because this file format is heavily encrypted and closed, it is extremely difficult to open or convert outside of the Avid ecosystem. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. This is why standard online converters fail to process it. If our analysis detects a supported embedded text format, viewing or extracting the metadata may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AVV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
