About AVIFS files
The .AVIFS file format is an animated image sequence that utilizes the highly efficient AV1 video codec within the AVIF container. Developed by the Alliance for Open Media, it is engineered to replace older animated formats by offering superior data compression, extensive color depth, and full high dynamic range (HDR) support. You can typically view these animations in modern web browsers like Google Chrome or advanced media players like VLC media player.
Despite its technical superiority, the .AVIFS format faces severe real-world compatibility limits. Most native operating system viewers, legacy web browsers, and email clients cannot render the animation, often showing a broken file icon instead. Uploading an .AVIFS file to standard content management systems or older social media platforms usually results in an 'unsupported file type' error. Furthermore, decoding AV1 sequences without dedicated hardware acceleration causes high CPU usage and battery drain on mobile devices.
To ensure your animations are actually visible to your audience, conversion is mandatory. For modern web use with transparency, WEBP is the most practical conversion target. If you need absolute cross-platform legacy support, converting to GIF works best, though you will lose color depth and increase file size. If you simply need the animation to play anywhere flawlessly, exporting it as an MP4 video is the safest choice.
Because .AVIFS relies on next-generation video encoding wrapped in an image container, standard online converters often fail to process the sequence. If our analysis detects a supported underlying video stream, viewing or conversion to a standard format may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AVIFS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The AVIFS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AVIFS converter.
