About AURORA files
A .aurora file is a user document, image, or database that has been maliciously locked by the Aurora ransomware. This malware infiltrates computer systems and uses strong cryptographic algorithms to scramble the internal data of valuable files, appending the .aurora extension to the filename.
Users cannot open these files with the original software, such as Microsoft Word or Adobe Photoshop. The primary disadvantage of this format is that it is a hostage container. The data is entirely inaccessible, and the encryption requires a unique private key to unlock.
Standard online converters will fail to process these files. You cannot simply convert a .aurora file back to DOCX, PDF, or JPG because the binary structure is intentionally destroyed by the encryption process. This file format is difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, proprietary, and malicious lock designed precisely to prevent unauthorized extraction. Often only the original malware operators possess the key to properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format that escaped full encryption, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

The AURORA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AURORA converter.
