About ASSOC files

The .ASSOC file extension is primarily generated by PLINK, a widely used open-source toolset for whole-genome association analysis. These files contain tabular statistical results from genetic studies (GWAS), detailing the association between genetic variants (SNPs) and specific traits. While essentially standard text files, they often pose a challenge because operating systems treat them as "unknown files," preventing a simple double-click launch. Furthermore, raw .ASSOC files can be massive - often exceeding hundreds of megabytes - which causes standard text editors like Notepad to freeze and crash. Users frequently attempt to open these in Microsoft Excel, but face friction: Excel may corrupt scientific data (converting gene names like 'SEPT9' into dates) or truncate rows if the dataset exceeds 1 million lines. For analysis, reporting, or publication, the best workflow is converting these files to CSV for database import, XLSX for safe spreadsheet viewing (with data type precautions), or PDF for immutable archiving of study results.
