About ASSOC files
The .ASSOC file is a tabular data file generated by PLINK, a widely used open-source toolset for Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS). It primarily stores genetic association analysis results, mapping statistical links between genetic variants and specific traits. These files are plain text and can be processed using command-line tools or scripting languages like Python and R. The major disadvantage of the .ASSOC format is its sheer volume. A single file can contain millions of rows representing Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) and easily exceed hundreds of megabytes. Because it relies on whitespace delimitation rather than standard commas, importing it directly into standard software is problematic. Opening an .ASSOC file in Microsoft Excel will almost certainly crash the application or truncate the data due to hardcoded row limits.
