Extract text from SolidWorks assembly templates (ASMDOT)

The .ASMDOT file is a SolidWorks Assembly Template created by Dassault Systèmes. It acts as a foundational blueprint for new 3D assemblies, storing critical document properties like measurement units, lighting settings, custom metadata, and standard drafting parameters.
These templates are designed specifically for SolidWorks, a professional CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software. The primary disadvantage of the .ASMDOT format is its highly proprietary nature. It cannot be natively opened by web browsers or standard operating system viewers. Users are forced to maintain an expensive SolidWorks subscription just to read or modify the template settings.
Standard online converters routinely fail to process .ASMDOT files because the format relies entirely on the native SolidWorks rendering engine. When sharing files with non-SolidWorks users, the best practice is to convert the file to a standard assembly format like SLDASM, or universal 3D CAD formats like STEP or IGES (if the template contains actual 3D geometry). Be aware that exporting to neutral formats will strip away the proprietary feature history and parametric constraints.
