About AOD files

An .AOD file is a Dynamics AX Object Data file used by Microsoft Dynamics AX (formerly Axapta). It stores compiled application objects such as database tables, forms, system classes, and reports within the Application Object Server (AOS) architecture. These files operate within a tiered layer system (e.g., axsys.aod for system base, axcus.aod for customer modifications) to manage ERP customizations.

This format has severe limitations for external use. It is a highly proprietary, closed binary format. You cannot open an .AOD file using standard web browsers, text editors, or typical database managers. Extracting data requires a fully configured, running instance of Microsoft Dynamics AX, which involves expensive enterprise licensing and complex server setups. Furthermore, the format is deprecated; modern versions of Dynamics 365 have replaced these binary blobs with standard XML files.

When handling an .AOD file, users typically need to convert the embedded objects into an XPO file (a text-based export format) to review source code, perform version control, or migrate customizations to a new environment. Standard online converters fail to process .AOD files because they lack the proprietary Microsoft compiler required to parse the binary tree.

Because this file format is difficult to open or convert, often only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects underlying string tables or embedded metadata, viewing those fragments may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your AOD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The AOD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AOD converter.
