About AN1 files
The .an1 file extension is a legacy proprietary format primarily generated by DeLorme Street Atlas USA, a discontinued mapping application now owned by Garmin. These files function as "Draw Files" (specifically Annotation Layer 1), storing user-created overlays such as custom route lines, circles, text notes, and highlighted zones. Because the format is closed and the software is "End of Life" (EOL), users frequently find their travel history and map data trapped in a format that modern tools like Google Earth or ArcGIS cannot read.
In a scientific context, .an1 files are also used by AERMOD, the EPA's preferred air quality dispersion model, to store "Annual 1st High" concentration data. Unlike the binary DeLorme files, these are often structured text or binary datasets used for environmental compliance reporting.
For DeLorme users, the goal is to convert these "digital fossils" into Keyhole Markup Language (.KML) or GPS Exchange Format (.GPX) for use on modern smartphones and web maps. However, direct conversion is difficult because standard tools like GPSBabel primarily support DeLorme's track logs (GPL) rather than these complex draw layers.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AN1 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert AN1 file to MP4, AVI, MOV, WMV, FLV, WEBM, MKV, M4V, 3GP, OGV, ASF or RM, you can use Street Atlas USA or similar software from the "GIS Annotation Layer" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MTS, MOV, RMVB, DIVX, RM, H264, TS, WMV, VOB, MP4, XVID or AVI files to AN1, try Street Atlas USA or another comparable tool in the "GIS Annotation Layer" category.
The AN1 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AN1 converter.
