An .AN1 file is a proprietary data format most commonly used as an animated map track file by legacy DeLorme mapping software, such as Street Atlas USA. Alternatively, it serves as a game animation data file for the MMORPG Ragnarok Online developed by Gravity, or as an output file for AERMOD, an EPA atmospheric dispersion modeling system.
Users typically need to convert this file to rescue old GPS route animations or extract game sprites. The main disadvantage of the .AN1 format is its closed, proprietary nature. DeLorme software is discontinued, meaning users are often locked out of their old map data on modern operating systems. Standard web browsers cannot read .AN1 data, and game files are strictly compiled for a specific engine, making them impossible to view without specialized tools.
For map tracks, the best target formats are GPX or KML. Converting to these standard formats preserves core GPS coordinates, though proprietary animation timings may be lost. For game assets, extracting the data to standard PNG image sequences or GIF files is ideal for viewing and editing.
