About AMFM files

An .amfm file is an Adobe Multiple Font Metrics file. It stores the global metric data for Multiple Master fonts, an early and now obsolete dynamic font technology created by Adobe. It dictates how different design axes, such as weight and width, interact across multiple master font designs.

These files were typically used by legacy font management tools like Adobe Type Manager or specialized font editors like FontLab. You can learn more about the underlying technology on Wikipedia: Multiple Master fonts.

Multiple Master fonts are completely obsolete today. Modern operating systems and web browsers do not natively support them. The .amfm format is proprietary, heavily restricted, and practically useless without its accompanying outline files (usually PFB). Because it is strictly a metrics file, it contains mathematical data rather than the visual outlines of the letters.

Directly converting an .amfm file to a standard document or image format is impossible. Instead, the entire Multiple Master font package must be compiled into modern OTF or TTF formats using dedicated typography software. If you only need to read the data, extracting the text-based metrics to TXT is the best option.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because standard online converters expect font outlines, not supplementary metric data. Often, only the original legacy software or high-end font compilers can properly read or export the package.

Convert.Guru analyzes your AMFM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The AMFM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AMFM converter.
