About 3GM files
The .3gm file extension represents a 3D Groove Model, a proprietary 3D asset format developed by The Groove Alliance. These files were primarily used in the late 1990s and early 2000s to store 3D geometry, textures, and animation data for web-based games and interactive experiences, often running alongside Adobe Shockwave.
Because the 3D Groove engine was discontinued decades ago, .3gm files suffer from severe accessibility disadvantages. They require long-obsolete authoring software or legacy browser plugins that are completely incompatible with modern operating systems. This creates a massive roadblock for game preservationists, researchers, or 3D artists attempting to recover old digital assets.
To modernize these files, users must convert them to standard, open 3D formats like OBJ, GLTF, or FBX. However, this is a closed, proprietary format with undocumented binary structures. Standard online converters fail to process it because they lack the specific legacy decoders required to parse the archaic vertex data.
Often, only specialized reverse-engineering tools or the original, out-of-print software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying structure or extractable mesh data, viewing or conversion may still be successful.
Convert.Guru analyzes your 3GM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The 3GM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our 3GM converter.
