A .1PH file is an internal data file used exclusively by the desktop version of Intuit TurboTax. It functions as a system cache or developer file, storing the raw application code, state logic, and reference data required by the software to process federal and state tax returns.
Unlike standard tax return documents saved as TAX files, .1PH files are completely proprietary and intended only for background system use. They lack any human-readable layout. This makes them highly problematic for typical document management workflows. Users backing up their PCs often find these files and try to open them directly, only to be met with error messages or unreadable binary code.
You might be trying to view an old tax return and mistakenly assume the .1PH file holds your printable financial documents. Standard document converters will always fail with this format. You cannot directly convert a .1PH to a PDF or an XLSX spreadsheet because the file simply does not contain a formatted document structure.
If you need a readable copy of your taxes, the best target format is PDF, but this conversion cannot be done using the .1PH file. You must locate the main TAX file, open it in the matching year's version of Intuit TurboTax, and use the software's built-in 'Save to PDF' feature to generate a printable return.
