Convert YAP to another file type
To convert YAP databases to another format, you need db4o or other Database software.
Convert a file to YAP
To convert other file formats to the "Object-Oriented Database" file type, you need software like db4o or a similar tool.
About YAP files
A .yap file is an object-oriented database created by db4o (Database for Objects), a legacy embedded database engine for Java and NET applications. Unlike traditional SQL databases that store data in tables, db4o stores entire program objects (like a Customer or Product class instance) directly into the .yap file in a binary format.
The Problem: These files are strictly proprietary and "schema-less" in the traditional sense; the file structure is defined by the compiled code of the application that created it. To open a .yap file correctly, you often need the original application's source code or libraries (.JAR or .DLL files) so the database engine understands the stored objects. Without these, the data appears as unreadable "GenericObjects." Furthermore, Actian (formerly Versant) discontinued db4o in 2014, making these files effectively obsolete and difficult to access on modern systems.
The Solution: For data migration or archiving, the best approach is converting the .yap content into structured text formats.
For Data Migration: Convert to SQL or CSV to import the data into modern relational systems like MySQL or PostgreSQL.
For Web/Interoperability: Convert to JSON or XML, which preserve the hierarchical nature of the original objects better than flat tables.
Convert.Guru analyzes your YAP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted YINS, YKEY and YMY files.

The YAP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our YAP converter.
