A .YAP file is an object database file created by db4o (Database for Objects), an embedded database engine originally built for Java and .NET applications. These files store serialized software objects directly to disk, bypassing traditional relational database tables and object-relational mapping (ORM) frameworks.
You can access these files using the legacy db4o libraries in a Java or C# programming environment. The underlying engine was acquired by Versant and later Actian, but active development of the software ceased entirely over a decade ago.
There are severe disadvantages to relying on .YAP files today. It is a strictly proprietary and discontinued format. Opening a .YAP file requires the exact original application code (the specific Java or C# classes) that created the objects. Without these classes, the database cannot instantiate the data, making standard extraction incredibly frustrating. Standard online converters fail to process it because the file lacks a universal, tabular schema.
When trying to rescue data from a .YAP file, the best target formats are CSV, JSON, or SQL. Converting to these formats makes the data readable in modern systems, though complex, deeply nested object relationships will likely be flattened or lost during the export process.
