Convert a file to XSX
To convert other file formats to the "Schema Layout File" file type, you need software like Microsoft Visual Studio or a similar tool.
About XSX files
The .xsx file is an XML Schema Layout configuration file used by developers. It stores the visual positioning (X and Y coordinates) of elements for an accompanying XML Schema Definition (xsd) file.
These files are generated and managed by Microsoft Visual Studio, a primary Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for Windows.
Users often want to convert these files to share schema diagrams with non-developers. However, the .xsx format has major disadvantages. It is highly proprietary and depends strictly on the original development environment. The .xsx file does not contain any actual database or schema data itself - only layout coordinates. Non-developers cannot view the visual diagram without installing a massive IDE that requires gigabytes of disk space. Additionally, if the parent xsd file is missing, the .xsx file is completely useless.
To share the visual diagram, developers must export the view directly from Visual Studio to standard formats like PDF or JPG. If you only need to access the coordinate data, the best target formats are raw XML or TXT.
This file format is difficult to open or convert because standard online tools lack the proprietary Microsoft rendering engine and cannot access the missing parent data file. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the visual diagram. Because .xsx files use plain text under the hood, our tool can inspect the file and show the internal XML content directly in your browser.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XSX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The XSX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XSX converter.
