About XSVF files

A .XSVF file is a Xilinx Serial Vector Format file. It contains binary instructions used to program FPGAs and CPLDs via JTAG boundary-scan chains. It is a compressed, binary representation of the standard human-readable ASCII SVF format, specifically optimized for embedded systems with strict memory limits. These files are primarily generated and deployed using Xilinx Vivado or the legacy Xilinx iMPACT toolset. The main disadvantage of .XSVF is its binary, highly proprietary nature. Because it strips away human-readable text to save space, you cannot simply open it in a text editor to debug JTAG chain operations. Standard web browsers and general software cannot read this format. If you need to troubleshoot boundary-scan errors or modify the scan chain, the binary compression makes it impossible without specialized Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software. If you need to debug the file, converting .XSVF back to SVF is usually required. Alternatively, firmware developers may need to convert the binary payload into C arrays or HEX files for inclusion in microcontroller source code. Note that reversing a binary XSVF back to ASCII SVF can lose original comments or formatting. This file format is difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, binary hardware programming format. Standard online converters fail because they lack the specific Xilinx parser libraries needed to decode the JTAG TAP controller state machine transitions encoded within. We can inspect the binary header to identify the file structure, and if our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XSVF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

FAQ

If you want to convert XSVF file to JS, TS, PY, JAVA, CPP, C, CS, PHP, RB, GO, RS or SWIFT, you can use Xilinx Vivado or similar software from the "JTAG Boundary-Scan Programming" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The XSVF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XSVF converter.
