About XMU files

The .XMU file extension is primarily used as an Expressive Music Container File, developed by the audio technology company Sonation. These files serve as interactive musical scores, designed to synchronize pre-recorded orchestral accompaniment tracks with the live performance of a solo musician.

Historically, .XMU files were authored using sonaBuilder for macOS and played back using the Cadenza mobile application. Cadenza would utilize the device's microphone to listen to the live musician's tempo, dynamically adjusting the playback speed of the .XMU audio data in real-time to match the performer.

The major disadvantage of the .XMU format is its highly proprietary nature. Because it acts as a closed software container rather than a standard audio file, it is completely unsupported by standard media players, modern Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs), or web browsers. The format relies heavily on a specialized software ecosystem that is largely inaccessible today, effectively locking your audio inside a proprietary package.

To actually listen to the audio trapped inside an .XMU container, you must convert it to a standard audio format like MP3, WAV, or OGG. However, note that exporting to these standard formats permanently strips away the interactive tempo-mapping metadata. You will successfully recover the high-quality audio, but it will be flattened into a static, non-interactive backing track.

Because this format is essentially an abandoned, closed-ecosystem container, standard online converters completely fail to process it. We will inspect the proprietary container, and if our deep analysis detects supported underlying or embedded audio streams, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XMU file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
