Convert a file to XGT
To convert other file formats to the "Proprietary Game Texture" file type, you need software like XG-Engine or a similar tool.
About XGT files
The .XGT file extension is a proprietary game asset format that stores 2D image data used as 3D model textures. These files are generated by the internal XG-Engine, a proprietary game engine built by Exient Entertainment. XGT files contain raster graphic data that is heavily optimized and often compressed for specific target console hardware, making them extremely efficient for game rendering but highly restrictive for average users. The primary disadvantage of the .XGT format is its closed-source nature. Because it is a proprietary format, you cannot open an .XGT file in standard image editing software like Adobe Photoshop or GIMP. The files lack standardized image headers, meaning normal operating systems and web browsers cannot preview them. Furthermore, the internal pixel data is often encoded in hardware-specific compression algorithms like ASTC or PVRTC. When modding games or extracting assets, users typically want to convert .XGT files to standard texture formats like .DDS (DirectDraw Surface) or .PNG. However, standard online image converters fail to process these files because they cannot parse the custom headers. This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert, and often only the original game engine or community-built extraction scripts designed for tools like QuickBMS can properly read the data. Our analysis tools can scan the internal hex structure to show text or embedded content. If our system detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XGT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
FAQ
If you want to convert XGT file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL, PLY or WRL, you can use XG-Engine or similar software from the "Game Texture Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to XGT, try XG-Engine or another comparable tool in the "Game Texture Storage" category.
The XGT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XGT converter.
