About XGML files

An .XGML file is an XML-based text document used to describe mathematical graphs, networks, and their visual layouts. It defines nodes, edges, properties, and geometric attributes required to render complex diagrams.

The format is most commonly associated with yEd Graph Editor, a desktop application used to create and analyze network diagrams, flowcharts, and mind maps.

The main disadvantage of the .XGML format is its lack of broad compatibility. Because it is raw data rather than a visual image, you cannot view a rendered graph natively in web browsers, office suites, or image viewers. Opening the file without specialized software simply reveals hundreds or thousands of lines of raw XML code.

To share these graphs with non-technical users, you must convert the file to standard visual formats like SVG, PNG, or PDF. If you need to migrate the network data to modern analysis tools like Gephi, converting it to GraphML or GEXF is recommended.

Converting .XGML files directly into images is difficult because it requires a layout engine to calculate the physical positions of nodes and edges.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XGML file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

FAQ

If you want to convert XGML file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use yEd Graph Editor or similar software from the "Network Graph Visualization Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to XGML, try yEd Graph Editor or another comparable tool in the "Network Graph Visualization Storage" category.

The XGML Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XGML converter.
