About XFLOW files

XFLOW files are specialized XML-based data files created by AmsterCHEM for the FlowExchange package. They are strictly designed to exchange material stream data between CAPE-OPEN compliant flowsheet simulators in chemical engineering. Using unit operations like XFlowSaver and XFlowLoader, engineers can accurately move complex thermodynamic data between entirely different simulation software platforms or archive material streams to a database. The open format stores detailed hierarchical nodes like Property, Compound, Phase, and reference enthalpy states.

Because .XFLOW is highly domain-specific, standard online file converters completely fail to process it. Attempting to convert it blindly using generic data tools will likely strip the complex compound parameters or ruin the case-sensitive XML syntax required by the schema. While you can technically open the file in a basic text editor to read the raw markup, making practical sense of the chemical data arrays requires the official XFlowViewer.exe stand-alone tool. The main frustration for users is extracting this specialized data for reporting - thankfully, the official viewer allows you to copy the nested data as tab-delimited text directly into spreadsheet tools.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XFLOW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The XFLOW Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XFLOW converter.
