About XCSL files

The .XCSL file is a proprietary color correction file used by Technicolor to apply their CineStyle flat picture profile. Videographers use this profile, primarily on DSLR cameras, to shoot "flat" video that preserves maximum dynamic range and shadow detail for later post-production. The file dictates the exact mathematical curve of how colors and contrast map onto the raw footage.

Historically, users opened these files using the Technicolor Color Assist software or specific CineStyle plugins for Adobe Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro, or DaVinci Resolve (see Wikipedia: Color grading).

The primary disadvantage of the .XCSL format is that it is heavily proprietary and entirely dependent on obsolete software. It requires specific plugins that are no longer actively updated. If you do not have the exact software environment, the file is unreadable, and web browsers or standard operating systems cannot preview the color shifts. Modern video production relies on universal 3D LUTs instead of closed vendor formats.

To use this color data today, you should convert the .XCSL file to industry-standard Lookup Table formats like CUBE or 3DL. Note that minor shifts in the mathematical curves might occur during conversion depending on the interpolation method.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because standard online converters fail to parse the closed color-mapping algorithms. Often, only the original Technicolor engine can properly read or export the exact tonal data. We can inspect the file's internal XML structure and show you the raw text strings. If our analysis detects supported underlying data, extracting the color profile may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XCSL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
