About WWU files

A .wwu file is a Work Unit used by Wwise, an interactive audio engine developed by Audiokinetic. Game developers use these files to divide large audio projects into smaller, manageable sections. They contain data defining sound hierarchies, events, mixing configurations, and spatial audio settings.

A major disadvantage of the .wwu format is the confusion it causes. Users often believe .wwu files contain playable audio. This is false. The file is completely text-based, formatted in XML, and only stores file paths referencing external audio assets (such as WAV files). Consequently, standard online audio converters fail to process them because there is no actual audio data to encode or decode. Furthermore, the format is highly proprietary; opening it meaningfully requires the original Wwise authoring software and the complete project directory.

If you need to parse or read the project data outside of Wwise, the best conversion targets are XML, JSON, or TXT. Even though compiling this data into a playable game audio bank requires the full Wwise suite, our analysis detects the embedded text format so you can view or extract the configuration data without needing specialized software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your WWU file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
